List of Services

Information and Referrals
  •  We provide information and referrals on a wide variety of topics including the following:

    • Income Support & Benefit Programs (i.e. BC Employment & Assistance, Canada Pension Plan- Disability, federal/provincial gas tax rebates, provincial homeowners grant for people with disabilities, ICBC discount for disabled drivers, etc.)
    • Disabled Parking Permits
    • Accessible Transportation/Travel
    • Accessible Housing/Housing Modifications
    • Recreation
    • Adaptive Equipment - for the home, work, vehicle
    • Employment/Self-employment
    • Education & Training
    • Disability specific information/groups

  • The Disability Resource Room is:

    • available to the public
    • features a computer with Internet access and some adaptive equipment
    • has print (books, pamphlets, newsletters and magazines), audio and video resource materials. If we don’t have the information you need, we will help you find it or find it for you.
Support and Assistance:
  • We are available (usually by appointment) to work with clients on specific challenges such as:

    • filling out income support (BC Persons With Disabilities and Canada Pension Plan Disability) and other application forms
    • other issues that arise in life and where the skills of good listening, problem solving, strategizing and being resourceful are of benefit.

  • Photocopy and fax access are also available for clients with relevant needs.

  • Community Volunteer Income Tax Program volunteers each March and April provide help to eligible individuals (low income and a simple tax situation) who are:
    • unable to complete their income tax and benefit returns themselves and
    • are unable to pay for assistance.

  • We provide Income Tax/Benefits return support to our clients with disabilities ‘off season’ by appointment.

Disabled Parking Permits:
  • Permits allows legal access to designated disabled parking
    spaces.
    • Temporary (up to 1 year) and Permanent Permits (valid for 3 years) are available
    • issued based on a physician’s approval.
    • Application forms and renewals from other issuers welcome (we are one of 8 issuers in the Province of BC).

  • Application forms are available through:
    • Physician’s offices
    • our office,
    • our Web site (www.peopleinmotion.org)
    • City Hall
    • Government Agent
    and once completed can be brought in or mailed to our office along with payment.

     

Active Living Programs:
  • Social Club - adult and young adult club members meet three times monthly to enjoy social, sport, arts and culture, camping and other recreational activities (as determined by the group themselves).

  • Bowling Group - this group meets Mondays at Bowlertime from 1:30 to 3:30 pm

  • Card Group - this is an informal group who meet Tuesdays from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon at our office to play some cards and socialize.

  • Tuesday Night Fitness Club- is a weekly adult program of fitness, cooperative games and sport activities held Tuesday nights at Arthur Hatton Elementary School from 7:00 to 8:30 pm
    • delivered with contract funds from Community Living BC

  • Youth Club - a program for teens with disabilities (13-18) which meets weekly to enjoy a varied recreation/social schedule (determined by the members) within a group setting.
    • delivered with contract funds from Variety-The Children’s Charity

  • Summer Youth Recreation and Days Off Programs - are offered to youth in receipt of services from the Community Living BC.

  • Wheelchair Curling - a newly formed activity happening every Thursday afternoon at the McArthur Island Curling Rink.

 

Cedar Creek Camp:
  • Cedar Creek Camp is a 10.2 acre lakefront property on White Lake offering a rustic but accessible camping experience primarily for the enjoyment of people with disabilities.
    • people with disabilities (as individuals, families, groups or organizations) have reservation priority from January to April 15th each year
    • reservations open to others after April 15th
    • available for rental from the May long weekend to Thanksgiving
    • a People In Motion annual membership is required to rent camp for individual and family renters.

  • We manage Cedar Creek Camp maintenance and development with funds raised through rentals and fundraising and with support of volunteers.

 

Para Transit Bus
  • People In Motion operates, under Motor Carrier License, a 16-passenger Para-transit bus. The bus supports our Active Living programs but is also available for other purposes. We offer a variety of day trips throughout the year to destinations in the region. The bus is also available for charter to any point in BC. Call us for Charter Tariff rates and conditions or for the day trip schedule.
    Bus features include:
    • wheelchair lift and restraint system
    • air conditioning
    • entry Grab Bar
    • seatbelts.        
                                     
Internet Access & Training:
  • We offer 1 to 1 basic training on how to access and use the Internet to interested people with disabilities. A volunteer trainer provides this service. Our resource room computer has a:
    • 19” colour monitor
    • Web cam
    • several keyboards to choose from
    • Laser printer

 

Workshops:
  • Workshops are offered on a wide variety of topics for people with disabilities and other interested parties. Please call or check our web site to find out what is scheduled; we welcome your ideas for workshops too. People In Motion is the local host for SuperHost Customers With Disabilities.

 

Awareness:
  • People with disabilities face numerous barriers in their daily living that deny or restrict their access to many opportunities taken for granted by citizens not living with disabilities. Building awareness of disability, the challenges of living with a disability and breaking down the systemic, attitudinal and physical barriers through advocacy, education, publicity and other effective means - all are ongoing roles of our agency.

 

Communications:
  • People In Motion publishes a quarterly newsletter filled with information of interest to people with disabilities and those who care about and support them. We also use our web site and e-mail to get the word out about agency activities and other matters. Members receive the newsletter as a membership benefit.

 

Volunteers:
  • Volunteers are an integral and welcome part of how we do business as an agency. Volunteer opportunities with People In Motion offer community members the opportunity to develop:
    • an awareness of people with disabilities
    • an understanding of the non-profit sector
    • marketable job skills and experience
    • credit for school/college/university courses
    • on-the-job training and experience


  • All this plus a chance to make a meaningful contribution to our programs, services and operations!
    Volunteers support all aspects of the agency including the Board of Directors, office services, fundraising, program support and camp management.

  • The volunteer application form is available on our website as well as at our office.

  • Volunteers are expected to demonstrate belief in our Mission Statement and our values through their actions as a People In Motion Volunteer. People In Motion has adopted the Canadian Code of Volunteer Involvement as a measure of the respect we place on volunteerism.
